BARFA tabby cat with its mouth open and upper lip curled in the flehmen response

The cat's second nose — the vomeronasal organ, flehmen and the chemistry of a cat's world

Your cat has a second, independent olfactory apparatus that we do not have at all. Jacobson's organ picks up molecules too heavy to travel through the air and sends them straight to the emotional centres of the brain, bypassing conscious analysis. On flehmen, pheromone fractions, felinine, and why a cat coming home from the vet can be a stranger to its own companion.

Forty minutes for fifteen years. A conversation with myself

The golden rule says: if you want a cat from a cattery, go there and see for yourself. I agree with it completely — except that over the years it brought me wildly different stories. On what a breeder sees while you are looking at kittens, on the hypoallergenic myth, and on the arithmetic that was the hardest part of the job.

EthicsTabby kitten asleep curled up on a cream knitted blanket in warm light

Why the breeder's blanket works and your t-shirt doesn't

A 2021 study showed that an unwashed item carrying your scent does nothing to calm an adult cat in an unfamiliar room. And yet the blanket a breeder packs for a kitten genuinely helps. That is not a contradiction — it is two different biologies. The maternal pheromone, the shared group scent, and an honest line drawn where the evidence stops.
