Breeders pack kittens off with a blanket steeped in the smell of the nest, so the little ones settle faster and more calmly in their new homes. Owners of adult cats do what looks like the same thing, leaving a worn t-shirt behind when they travel. Research says the second one does not work — and research is right. It also says the first one makes sense — and that is true too. There is no contradiction here, because these are two different biological phenomena. This is a story about the sebaceous glands of a nursing queen, about a French veterinarian named Patrick Pageat, and about why certain breeding practices rest on solid chemical ground even though nobody has yet run a proper study on them.

Let us take it apart. The distinction matters — to the breeder, to the adopting family, and to anyone who has ever thought about leaving their cat a jumper while they were away.

Behnke 2021 — what was actually shown, and what wasn't

Let us start with the study every article debunking "the myth of the owner's t-shirt" leans on.

Alexandra Behnke, Kristyn Vitale and Monique Udell tested 42 adult cats with an average age of six years. These were not three separate groups — every cat went through all the conditions, in five two-minute phases, in a room it did not know:

  1. Owner present, seated inside a marked circle.
  2. Cat alone.
  3. Owner returns or an object carrying their scent is placed in the circle.
  4. Alone again.
  5. The opposite condition to phase three.

Half the cats got the person first and the scent second, the other half the reverse. The researchers measured distress vocalisations, time spent inside the circle, and rubbing against either the person or the object.

It is worth pausing on what that object was, because the detail usually vanishes in summaries: the owners brought their own unwashed item — a shoe, a sock, a nightshirt or a blanket. Not a laboratory sample, but exactly what a person would leave a cat on the way out of the house.

The result

Owner present. Significantly fewer distress vocalisations than in either of the alone phases. The secure base effect appeared in roughly half the cats.

Cat alone. High levels of distress.

Owner's scent alone. No improvement. The researchers had predicted the object would lower anxiety relative to being alone — and found no significant evidence for it. The cats rubbed against the object significantly less than against the person, and spent little time near it.

One thing in these results deserves particular attention. The object carrying the owner's scent was not ignored — 27 of the 42 cats approached it or came into its vicinity. What is more, the cats that lingered near it longest were the ones with an insecure attachment style, which is to say precisely the most anxious ones. The shirt drew attention, especially from stressed cats. It simply did not calm them.

The secure base effect is a concept borrowed from research on attachment in children: the presence of a close figure lets you explore your surroundings freely, with somewhere to return to for comfort. In cats it was triggered by the person. It was not triggered by an object that smelled of them. I have written about cats' attachment to their owners, and how it was measured, in a separate piece.

Here is where the distinction crucial to breeders begins. Behnke and colleagues did not test kittens — they studied adult cats. They did not test the mother's scent — they studied a human's. They did not test pheromones — they studied body odour on fabric. The situation lasted a few minutes, and the question was whether an object carrying the owner's scent could replace the owner as a secure base.

It is a very clean, important study. It is simply about something other than what a breeder does when packing a blanket for a fourteen-week-old kitten leaving for a new home.

But does the cat even notice it's my shirt?

It does, and it knows whose it is. Miyairi and colleagues (2025) offered thirty cats three scents at once: their own owner, an unfamiliar person, and a blank sample. The cats sniffed the unfamiliar scent longest — 4.82 seconds on average, against 2.40 seconds for the owner's scent and 1.93 seconds for the blank.

Those last two numbers are worth dwelling on. Their own person's scent held a cat barely half a second longer than a swab with nothing on it. Longer sniffing is investigation of novelty, not a signal of affection — and what is familiar, a cat notes and moves past.

Only both studies together give the full picture. A cat can tell the scent of the human it lives with from a stranger's. But telling apart is not the same as being soothed — and that gap is exactly where the whole difference between the t-shirt and the blanket sits.

Pageat and the chemistry of a mother's presence

To understand why the breeder's blanket is a different biology, we have to go back to the 1990s.

Patrick Pageat, a French veterinarian and behaviourist, identified and classified feline pheromones, described their functions and laid the groundwork for today's pheromone therapy. He also patented — under the name animal appeasing pheromones — a composition based on the skin secretion around the mammary glands of nursing female mammals.

The cat-appeasing pheromone is secreted from the sebaceous glands in the skin around a nursing queen's teats. It is not present all the time: it appears 3–4 days after birth and persists until 2–5 days after the kittens are weaned, giving two to three months at most. Which is to say, exactly when a kitten is suckling, sleeping against its mother and learning the world by smell.

Chemically there is nothing mystical about it — Pageat's patent describes a mixture of fatty acids, among them palmitic, oleic and linoleic, together with their derivatives.

Three functions are attributed to this pheromone: reassuring the newborn, strengthening the bond between mother and kitten, and reducing tension within the litter, since all the kittens share the mother's scent.

An honest caveat about what nobody measures

It is sometimes repeated that the receptors in a kitten's vomeronasal organ — the Jacobson's organ, an additional chemical sensor at the base of the nasal septum, connected to the mouth by a duct opening just behind the incisors, with which cats read scent signals (Verberne and de Boer 1976) — are most sensitive to this pheromone between weeks 2 and 9 of life.

No such measurement has ever been taken. Nobody has studied the sensitivity of those receptors as a function of a cat's age.

What is documented is only a coincidence in time: the mother secretes the pheromone precisely during the period when kittens live in a group with almost no conflict. The authors of the DePorter study describe that overlap cautiously — as something that may be coincidental or causal — and explicitly call the hypothesis of a causal link speculation on the part of the lead investigator. That is how we treat it here too.

What remains once the over-interpretation is subtracted is still substantial. A nursing queen spends some three months emitting a chemical signal that her kittens have with them through the most intense period of their development. A blanket lying in the nest carries that same material.

F3, F4 and the shared group scent

The maternal pheromone is not the only substance on a breeder's blanket. The second important player comes from an entirely different place — the cheeks.

Pageat isolated five fractions from the sebaceous gland secretion of a cat's face, labelled F1 to F5. Three of them have established functions:

We do not know what F1 and F5 do. Territorial or defensive roles are sometimes assigned to them, but those are guesses appended to letters, not research findings.

The most interesting one from the blanket's point of view is F4. In feline groups — in the wild, in a cattery, in a household with several cats — the animals rub against one another regularly. Each such rub leaves F4 on the other individual, until in time the whole group begins to smell alike.

And here a line has to be drawn straight away, because this is where popular writing on pheromones usually goes one step too far. John Bradshaw, in his 2016 review, writes that cohesion in a colony of cats is expressed through, and probably maintained by, rubbing and mutual grooming — but about the transmission of scent signals themselves he is far more cautious: it may play a largely uninvestigated role. He does not claim that cats recognise their own by shared scent rather than by appearance, and neither will we.

A blanket lying in a cattery for weeks collects F4 from the mother, from the littermates, from the adult cats, and often from the breeder themselves, against whose legs the cats rub. That it collects it is certain, because that is how rubbing works. That the kitten reads "this is my group" from it is a hypothesis well grounded in what we know about feline olfaction — but still a hypothesis.

When such a blanket arrives in a new home, it is the kitten's one familiar point of reference. The first night in a strange place, everything around smelling wrong — and this single point that smells of its own.

The socialisation window — when a kitten learns who counts as family

In short windows of time, a young animal's brain is exceptionally receptive to a particular kind of stimulus. What is written in then stays for a long while. Once the window closes, the same stimulus works far more weakly, or not at all.

In cats the best-described such window is the socialisation period falling between weeks 2 and 7 of life (Karsh and Turner 1988), extended by some authors to week 9. This is when a kitten learns whom to treat as its own: people, other cats, dogs, the sounds and smells of a home. Eileen Karsh's classic work showed that extending daily handling from fifteen minutes to forty significantly increased the time kittens subsequently spent in close contact with a person — and the difference was still visible at fourteen weeks of age.

The hypothesis regarding the maternal pheromone goes like this: within that same window, a kitten's brain associates its scent with a state of safety — the mother's presence, warmth, access to food. When the scent appears later, on a blanket or from a diffuser, it triggers the learned association. This is a hypothesis, not an established finding — and that is how we present it.

Something that has been measured directly happens in parallel: a kitten remembers its own mother's scent, and for a very long time. Szenczi and colleagues (2022) followed kittens from weaning until they were more than a year old, and the trace of that scent was still detectable — although the result is more tangled than its summary suggests, and we will come back to it at the end.

Why fourteen weeks, if the window closes at nine

Because these are two different benefits and they are worth keeping apart.

Keeping kittens until week 14 does not extend the socialisation window — that closes when it closes, regardless of where the kitten lives. What it does give is two other things: longer contact with the group scent, and an effect that has been measured outright.

Ahola, Vapalahti and Lohi (2017) gathered survey data on 5,726 cats across 40 breeds. Weaning before week 8 raised the risk of aggression. Cats weaned after week 14 were less likely to show aggression towards unfamiliar people than early-weaned cats, and less likely to over-groom than those weaned at week 12. The effect on that over-grooming was partly explained by the effect on aggression.

This is one of the strongest pieces of work in the whole puzzle — and the reason breed federation rules set a minimum age for collecting a kitten.

In practice — what to take from the breeder and how to use the blanket

If you are buying a kitten, or are a breeder putting together a going-home kit:

What to take from the breeder

  • A blanket from the litter — one that lay with the mother in the last days before collection. It carries the maternal pheromone and the group scent.
  • A small toy from the litter — ideally a soft toy with no small parts. Absolutely no strings or ribbons the kitten could swallow. It carries the littermates' scent.
  • A handful of litter from the breeder's tray — a spoonful or two added to the new tray helps the kitten find the right spot by a familiar smell.
  • Food unchanged for at least two weeks — reluctance towards new foods is milder when the smell and taste are familiar. Introduce changes later and gradually; I have set out a feeding schedule for kittens from weaning here.

How to use the blanket in the new home

  • Do not wash it for the first few weeks. Pheromones are fatty substances, and detergents exist precisely to dissolve fat — washing almost certainly removes most of what the blanket came for. Nobody has measured this exactly, so I will not write that it "destroys it completely", but the risk is obvious and offset by nothing.
  • Keep it where the kitten rests — in the bed, in the carrier, as a hiding place for the first days.
  • When the kitten hides, move the blanket to the hiding place rather than pulling the cat out by force.
  • Once the cat has properly settled in, the blanket can be washed with everything else. There is no threshold in days after which "the scent fades anyway" — it is simply that nobody has studied how quickly it loses activity in a home.

What to avoid

  • Breeders: washing the blanket just before handing the kitten over. It destroys precisely what was meant to help.
  • Owners: washing the blanket immediately after arrival.
  • Spraying the blanket with perfume, air freshener or essential oils. Some oils — eucalyptus, or tea tree — are highly toxic to cats.
  • Packing the blanket into a sealed plastic bag for the journey.

When there is no blanket — what the research on synthetics actually says

Not every adoption starts with access to the mother's scent. Shelters, kittens found on the street, emergencies.

There are three synthetic feline pheromones on the market (Vitale 2018): an analogue of F3 for marking objects, an analogue of the maternal pheromone, and an analogue of the interdigital semiochemical. Contrary to what is often repeated, there is no F4 product — an analogue was proposed, but never reached the market.

This distinction matters, because the most frequently cited study concerns the maternal pheromone, not F4. It also concerns a situation familiar to every household with more than one cat — on when a second cat is a good idea and when it is not, there is a separate piece.

Theresa DePorter's team (2019) ran a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 45 households with two to five cats reporting aggression between the animals. The conflict was not fresh: it had lasted 901 days on average, with a median of 594. For 28 days the homes ran diffusers — with either a synthetic analogue of the maternal pheromone or a placebo. Owners rated the intensity of aggression weekly, through to day 42.

The pheromone group did better. The difference was statistically significant on day 21 and again on day 42, and across the study period taken as a whole it came out significant at p = 0.043.

And now the part that usually gets left out

This study is sometimes described as "the highest research standard". It is not — and its own authors do not present it that way.

It is a pilot study, which is stated in its title. The authors set the significance threshold at 0.10 in advance, rather than the usual 0.05. The groups were unequal (20 households against 25), and the only outcome measure was the assessment of the owner who lives with those cats and filled in the questionnaire themselves.

The effect did not hold evenly: on day 28 the difference between the groups vanished, only to return on day 42.

Most important, though, is what the word "significant" conceals: the placebo group also improved markedly. Its aggression score fell from 83.5 at the start to 47.0 on day 21. Every participant went through training on feline behaviour, received instructions for handling flare-ups, and was firmly advised against punishing the cats. That alone worked. The pheromone added the rest — on that same day 21 the diffuser group stood at 21.8.

So the practical conclusion is not "a plug-in will solve the conflict", but rather: changing how you handle your cats does the larger part of the job, and the pheromone is a sensible reinforcement.

If you have no blanket from a breeder: switch a diffuser on a day or two before the kitten arrives, in the room where it will spend its first days, and leave it running for at least a month. Do not use air fresheners or scented oils alongside it.

With shelter kittens, though, it is worth remembering something with firmer backing than any chemistry from a plug-in. Casey and Bradshaw (2008) studied 37 kittens across three shelters: some received standard care, some an additional socialisation programme between weeks 2 and 9 of life. A year after adoption, the owners of the latter reported significantly more emotional support from their cats, and fewer of those cats showed behaviour indicating fear of people. Contact with a human in the first weeks makes a difference that is still visible a year later.

Honestly — what we still don't know

Every decent summary has to show where the data run out.

What is well documented

  • The anatomy and secretion of the sebaceous glands around a nursing queen's teats, and the time window of that secretion.
  • The chemical composition of the calming pheromone — specific fatty acids, not a hypothetical substance.
  • Cats rubbing against one another as a behaviour that maintains group cohesion.
  • The effect of weaning age on adult behaviour (Ahola et al. 2017, 5,726 cats).
  • The effect of additional socialisation of shelter kittens, still visible a year after adoption (Casey and Bradshaw 2008).
  • A cat's ability to distinguish a familiar human's scent from a stranger's (Miyairi et al. 2025).
  • The absence of a calming effect from an owner's scent on an object, in adult cats (Behnke et al. 2021).

What we do not know

  • No study exists on the "breeder's blanket in a new home" scenario with cortisol or any other stress marker measured in the kitten. The practice rests on a mechanism and on breeders' experience, not on measurement.
  • We do not know how quickly pheromones on fabric lose activity in domestic conditions.
  • We do not know whether a blanket and a diffuser add up, or whether a cat's sense of smell simply saturates.
  • We do not know how sensitivity to the maternal pheromone changes with a cat's age. We know adult cats respond to its synthetic analogue, because the DePorter study showed that — but not whether they respond more weakly than kittens.
  • We do not know how much the "shared group scent" really carries. That cats rub against one another and that this maintains group cohesion is described. But the transmission of scent signals on those occasions is what Bradshaw (2016) calls a largely uninvestigated role, and reviews of the area (Vitale Shreve and Udell 2017) describe it as promising rather than settled. A search of the medical literature databases returns not a single primary study measuring recognition of "one's own" by colony scent in domestic cats.

What the study on memory of the mother's scent actually showed

Szenczi and colleagues (2022) tested whether a kitten remembers its own mother's scent. Kittens from 15 litters were tested at weaning in week 8, then again at 4 and 6 months and past one year of age. Each time they had a choice between their own mother's scent, that of an unfamiliar female in a similar reproductive state, and a blank sample.

The result is more interesting than the shorthand "cats remember their mothers". At weaning age, the kittens sniffed the unfamiliar female longer. Only as adults did they spend longer on their own mother's scent.

The authors are exceptionally restrained about it: they write plainly that what this means in functional and cognitive terms is not yet clear, and ask whether it should be called recognition at all — or rather the phenomenon familiar from research on human olfaction, in which scents we have grown used to are judged more pleasant.

So: a cat differentiates its mother's scent more than a year after separation. That is a great deal. But "differentiates" is not the same as "recognises and misses", and the study reaches a year and a bit, not years.

So one can say, honestly: the practice of giving a blanket from the breeder rests on well-documented chemistry of the maternal pheromone — we know where it comes from, what it is made of and when it is present. The intervention itself has not been studied directly, and for as long as that holds, it is worth calling it well-founded rather than proven.

In summary

An unwashed item carrying a human's scent does not reduce an adult cat's stress in an unfamiliar place. Clothing will not replace a person, and there is no point pretending it will.

This does not contradict breeding practice, though, because a blanket from the queen works on a different principle. A nursing cat secretes a calming pheromone — a chemical signal of safety, present exactly in the weeks when a kitten is learning the world. On top of that comes the F4 pheromone, left behind by rubbing: the blanket collects it from the mother, the littermates and the other cats, although how precisely a kitten reads that shared scent remains an open question.

In a new and unfamiliar home, such a blanket is a chemical anchor for a kitten. Do not wash it for the first few weeks. If there is no blanket, a diffuser with a synthetic analogue of the maternal pheromone is sensible support — bearing in mind that in the study which showed this, the larger part of the improvement came from simply handling the cats sensibly.

A breeder packing a kitten a blanket from its mother is doing something backed by thirty years of pheromone research. A family fretting over a lost blanket is right: it is not sentiment, it is chemistry.

It is only worth remembering where what has been measured comes to an end. The mechanism is described. The blanket itself, in a new home, is not — not yet. That difference does not rob the practice of sense, but it does deny it the word "proven".

Can I leave my cat a t-shirt with my scent when I go away?

You can, but do not expect it to calm them. Behnke, Vitale and Udell (2021) tested this directly on 42 adult cats. Every cat went through all conditions: owner present, alone, and alone with an unwashed item the owners brought themselves — a shoe, a sock, a nightshirt or a blanket. Anxiety dropped only in the physical presence of a person. With the scent alone, the researchers found no significant improvement over being by themselves — although the cats did notice the object and approached it. What helps instead: the same feeder as always, an unchanged daily routine, and access to hiding places.

Where does the queen secrete the calming pheromone?

From the sebaceous glands in the skin around her teats, during nursing. It appears 3–4 days after birth and persists until 2–5 days after the kittens are weaned, which comes to two or three months at most (Vitale 2018). The kitten is exposed to it exactly while suckling, sleeping against its mother and learning the world by smell. A blanket lying in the nest picks up the same material — not as a metaphor, but as the presence of specific compounds, mostly fatty acids.

How long does a breeder's blanket keep its scent?

Nobody knows, and it is not worth pretending otherwise. No one has measured how quickly pheromones on fabric lose activity in a home. Breeders' experience points to the first two or three weeks as the period when the colony scent is still distinct, but that is an observation, not a measurement. The practical conclusion is simple regardless: ask for a blanket that lay with the mother in the last days before collection, and do not wash it during the first weeks in the new home.

I adopted a kitten from a shelter, with no blanket. Can that be made up for?

Partly. If the mother is still at the shelter, ask for any scrap of cloth from her bed. If not, the closest available substitute is a diffuser with a synthetic analogue of the maternal pheromone. It is not the same as a blanket, because a blanket also carries the scent of the littermates and the whole group, but its mechanism is documented. Separately, it is worth remembering that for shelter kittens the measurable difference comes from extra socialisation itself — contact with people in the first weeks (Casey and Bradshaw 2008).

How long should a kitten stay with the breeder?

The longer the better for adult behaviour, and there are hard data on this. Ahola, Vapalahti and Lohi (2017) surveyed 5,726 cats across 40 breeds. Weaning before 8 weeks raised the risk of aggression, and cats weaned after 14 weeks were less likely to show aggression towards strangers than early-weaned cats and less likely to over-groom than cats weaned at 12 weeks.
